Race Report: Winter Championship Saturday at Foothills

Plenty of Fireworks across the board as points battles are decided.

March 16, 2019-Dacusville, SC-By Gray Sutherland

An unusually cold March afternoon was not enough to put a freeze on the fireworks that abounded at Foothills as the Winter Points Series wrapped up its races at the Superbowl of the upstate. An final update on points champions will be provided as the points are finalized. In an interesting twist, it was a good day to be named Cameron as four drivers named Cameron won main events and Cameron Aroneck celebrated his 16th birthday at the track with a delicious chocolate-vanilla cake and a 4th place finish in Clone 325 out of 11 that took the green. Cameron Smith would take the Clone 375 win starting from the pole and then go right back out in Flathead and drive to the front in that main as well. Lastly, Cameron Lambert would finish the dominant day for the Camerons by taking Junior 2 and 1. Sommer McClure was able to win a race of attrition by avoiding trouble from a 3rd starting spot in a caution filled Champ main by being the last kart standing at the checkered. Simon Seay proved persistence pays off by starting out front in a ten kart Junior 3 main and holding off a late race charge to secure his first win of 2019 and second career win overall. It was a great sight to see 120 entries around the track as this was back to back weeks Foothills would feature over 100 entries on a day. To prove how much speed was in the track was, Jess Burrell in the 21 ripped off an 11.60 as a lap time in Junior 3. Foothills will be off for at least the next two weeks to rest and recuperate for non points money races and the eventual start of the Summer Points Series later on in April. As always, be sure to check the Foothills Speedway Facebook page for any official updates concerning the track. On a side note, one of those weeks Foothills will be off is for the start of the Big 3 Challenge Series which gets underway at Patriot Speedway in Blacksburg, SC on March 30. This masterful series will be making a stop at Foothills on June 29 as part of their schedule. Foothills extends a deep and heartfelt thank you to everyone for coming out and support the 2018-2019 Winter Series and don’t forget to support other tracks across the area. The Superbowl of the Upstate in Dacusville, SC looks forward to seeing everyone back again.
